Reparation and surface treatment of ships
Abstract
A product containing coal tar (CAS 8007-45-2 , 84650-4-4) was substituted to a product without coal tar.
Description of the substitution
Products labeled "poisonous" are used for reparation and surface treatment of ships. They contain coal tar (CAS 8007-45-2 , 84650-4-4) Benzo(a)pyrene and xylenes (CAS 1330-20-7 dimethylbenzene ) with MAL codenumbers 4-6.
The working Environment Authority order, that the company has to examine the possibility of substitution to products that are less hazardous, but feasible for the job.
The company respond, that they substitute to a product with MAL codenumber 3-1. This product does not contain coal tar and it can be used as a primer, protecting against corrosion on the keel or as a sealer before the application of an antifouling agent.
