Cleaning using dibasic esters after polyester casting
Abstract
Acetone (CAS No. 67-64-1 Acetone ) has been replaced by dibasic esters for cleaning tools and moulds for polyester casting.
Description of the substitution
When casting in polyester there is a need for cleaning tools and moulds. Earlier acetone (CAS no 67-64-1 Acetone )allmost allways was used for this cleaning. Smaller moulds and tools can be cleaned with a solution of dibasic esters instead.
The example includes
Safety and health at work:
Yes
Environment:
-
Technical requirements the product must fulfil
What problems made you look for a substitution?
The use of an organic solvent - acetone
What substance or product did you use before?
Acetone
What solution did you find?
Instead of acetone you can use a solution of dibasic esters like Fantosol BME-1 (Sveda kemi) or DBE (Brenntag Nordic)
Assessment of the solution
Good. The use and the evaporation of acetone was reduced
What other solutions did you try/assess?
Further information or literature
Not all cleaning jobs in connection with polyester casting can be performed without acetone. F.ex. when cleaning big moulds acetone is still used.
